Craik's Seniors

The formative meeting of the Craik seniors was held in the library room of the town hall on February 6, 1968. The "Craik Pensioners' and Senior Citizens of Saskatchewan Incorporated Organization" was the result of this meeting. At the first meeting held February 19, 1968, the name was shortened to "The Happy Gang." Forty-eight members registered that year, and the executive was: President-Cora Carlson, 1st Vice President-Kate Waterhouse, 2nd Vice President-Fred Parks, 3rd Vice President-Ken Wightman, Secretary-Nora Exelby, and Treasurer-Marie Parks

Over the years the membership has varied in number. In 1996, the mebership was twenty-four. Since 1969 all meetings and activities of the Craik club have been held in the old and new Legion Community hall, and was financed by government grants. Recently these grants have been discontinued, and members are now required to pay their own expenses. Membership dues have been raised to compensate for the loss of grants, and some programs have been phased out because of lack of funds.

District 19 Council was formed in 1986 and consists of five towns on Number Eleven highway from Aylesbury to Kenaston, as well as five towns on highway No. 2 from Liberty to Colonsay. Holdfast joined later. Each spring the towns of District 19 take turns hosting the Winter Games. Each club holds two events, one of which must be a card game. These games are very popular and create a lot of excitement and good will. Records are kept of the wins and awards are given at a wind-up dinner.

Craik Seniors meet twice a week to play bingo or a variety of card games. The favorite of the day seems to be "hand and food canasta." Pot Luck dinner is enjoyed on the first Monday of each month, and a meeting is held on th ethird Monday to keep the members up-to-date on activities available. Some fun days have been a trip to Watrous to see the R.C.M.P. musical ride, to Moose Jaw to view the murals, the Mosaic , and the Shrine Circus.
